Timber Pavilion

Universidad Europea Madrid, Erasmus Exchange

We aimed to create a new social hub that provided not only an enclosed point of rest, but something beautiful as well as functional; offering a space for work, socialising and enjoyment. Together, we designed a spiraling pavilion made in timber, for its ease of construction and our ambition to incorporate a sustainable viewpoint.

I proposed recycling fabric sourced from the students’ donations, worked on the budget and found suppliers online, as I looked for how to achieve the most in what little we had. I was eager to contribute to structural solutions and considered worst-cases of wind loads to propose optimal locations to brace the structure against lateral forces. Working towards a construction schedule, our design evolved slightly as we triangulated the members instead of having vertical members to offer additional lateral stability.

Once the design was made final, it came the fun part of working in the workshop to test connection details and later pre-fabricate panels before bringing them to site for assembly.
