Building with Natural Materials

Prior to my Erasmus Exchange, I spent a few weeks in Andalusia working with a community to insulate an outdoor kitchen before the winter which was approaching. We prepared a cob mix from locally sourced materials, before spreading it in layers over the existing superstructure as well as on the ground floor of the space.
I also worked with this community to design and construct a bamboo pavilion. I feel that this experience of working with natural building materials was not only enjoyable but has developed in me an awareness that design should not be limited to only work done in the office or at University, as there is a lot that can be learnt on site.

I volunteered on weekends for the construction of a prefabricated school being designed by Spanish architecture studio, Recetas Urbanas. They were working closely with the community to deliver classrooms to this impoverished neighbourhood in suburban Madrid. It was a rewarding experience to understand first-hand the prefabricated construction sequence and technique as well as work with the students and teachers of this school.
